John Maclean completes triathlon as an able-bodied athlete

28 Oct 2014

The amazing and inspirational achievements of Paralympian, John Maclean have been brought to bare over the weekend, completing the one kilometre swim, 30 kilometre ride and 10 kilometre walk/run of the Nepean triathlon as an able-bodied athlete.

It’s been a 26-year, full-circle journey for Maclean, who was left a paraplegic after being run down on his bicycle when training for the very same event in June 1988.

Suffering multiple breaks to his pelvis and back, a fractured sternum, punctured lungs and a broken arm, Maclean defied many in his pursuit of sporting successes throughout the World.

Steely determination saw the Australian become the first wheelchair athlete to finish the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, the first non-American inducted into that event’s Hall of Fame, the first wheelchair athlete to swim the English Channel and he has also competed in the internationally acclaimed Molokai Ocean Challenge.

National representation followed at the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and during the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games he secured a rowing silver medal.

A chance meeting between Maclean and NeuroPhysics Training and Rehabilitation founder Ken Ware 18 months ago, now sees the former paraplegic again defying all the odds.

“I went and saw Ken to see if he could help with some problems I was having with my rotator cuff so I had no pre-expectation, but after going through the therapy he asked me what it was I wanted to do,” said Maclean.

“I said I wanted to walk. From doing the tremor therapy there was migration of activity through to my legs and they were just bouncing around.

“Ken confirmed that that sort of activity suggested to him that I should be able to walk, and let’s work towards that.

“Ken challenged my thinking, the way I acted and what I believed to ensure a different outcome, and explored what I was capable of with my nervous system.

“It’s revolutionary what Ken is doing; he’s a brilliant mind and I hope that in time his work will get out there to help many more people.”

Similarly, Ware was ecstatic at seeing the outstanding progress made by Maclean.

“It’s been a privilege to be a part of John’s amazing journey and to have seen his rapid progression from walking for the first time after 25 years, to now having completed a triathlon as an able-bodied athlete is truly inspiring,” said Ware.

“John’s can-do attitude is undeniable. No sooner had we opened up and reactivated his system he was then able to walk his first steps.

“Eight months later he’s again been out testing the limits and rings to tell me he was now able to ride his bike.

“To accomplish something like that takes incredible courage. You can’t instil that sort of attitude into anyone, it’s a huge part of his DNA.”

Testament to his endurance, Maclean has also juggled a hectic travelling schedule, undertaking good-will missions throughout the world, while also maintaining his own charity foundation, which was the major beneficiary from the JMF WalktheTalk event at the Nepean Triathlon.

“John Maclean has created a benchmark for what can be achieved with the assistance of the NeuroPhysics Training and Rehabilitation program,” added Ware.

“It was a very special time for everyone to see him cross the finish line, particularly for those who have been a part of his incredible journey.”

While there are no guarantees, Ken Ware stands by his claim that NeuroPhysics Training and Rehabilitation helps 100% of people, 100% of the time, irrespective of their condition.

HISTORY OF NEUROPHYSICS TRAINING AND REHABILITATION

The story of NeuroPhysics Training and Rehabilitation began 30 years ago, with its origins evolved through self diagnosis by Ken Ware, guiding clients through unique parameters, using specific equipment, and under micro stimulation is able to detect and assess the client to correct imbalances which are a signature of how that person physically and emotionally interacts with their environment.

Put simply, NeuroPhysics Training and Rehabilitation is a scientific, systems based, exercise program that allows for the complete physical and emotional recalibration of the human nervous system. This unique process restores optimal health, system integrity and has the capacity to optimise the functional performance of any person who engages in the process.

Ken Ware has only recently returned from presenting in the Netherlands at the 6th International Nonlinear Science Conference - Society for Chaos Theory in Psychology & Life Sciences, where John Maclean's example was used as case study evidence for the merits of NeuroPhysics Training and Rehabilitation.

Unlike most other training and rehabilitation methods, NeuroPhysics Training and Rehabilitation targets the origins of pain and disorders rather than just the mechanics and symptoms. It’s a solution focused process rather than a problem focused one, assisting clients in the control and management of the following areas:

• Chronic Pain

• Complex Chronic Disorders

• Spinal Cord Injuries

• Sports Performance

• Weight Management

• Personal Health and Wellbeing

The International NeuroPhysics Functional Performance Institute is based at Robina on Australia’s Gold Coast.
