FERLING CELEBRATES QLD NATIONAL TWENTY/20 SUCCESS

07 Feb 2014

A fired up Holly Ferling delivered plenty of heat in her four over spell for Queensland today, securing 2/13 against the ACT, as the Fire led by Warwick product Delissa Kimmince, chased down a 108-run total to be crowned National women’s cricket Twenty/20 champions in Perth.

Such economic returns have been a feature of Ferling’s play during the T20 finals series, continuing the momentum from her successful short-format performances for Australia in the recently completed Ashes series.

Similarly, Kimmince‘ unbeaten knock of 78 runs off just 52 balls marked an hour of power, which saw the Fire dominate the Meteors in an entertaining spectacle with the bat.

Earlier, Ferling put the anchors on the ACT run-rate, returning figures of 1/10 from her opening three overs, before bowling the 19th over and rattling the stumps of ACT middle-order batsman Laura Wright. The 18 year-old’s overall performance was typified by an extraordinarily tight line as she amassed 16 uncontested, dot balls from 24 balls delivered.

“This is a fantastic result for Queensland and I’m just stoked to have been able to play my part,” said Ferling.

“It was a great display out there, we tried to avoid bowling wide and found there was plenty in the pitch which made it difficult for the opposition to score runs.

“A total team effort and we’re all very proud Queenslanders here today. Delissa Kimmince was on song on such a difficult deck and was a true warrior in the final.”

The Fire’s seven-wicket victory marks the first ever championship title for the team with Kimmince‘ domination ensuring victory with six overs remaining.

“It was great to have the opportunity to open up with the bat which was set up well by our performances in the field,” said Kimmince.

“This win is for all the girls in Maroon and we couldn’t ask for a better finish to the season for Queensland.”

Holly Ferling’s chances of retaining a spot in Australia’s Twenty/20 team to contest the World Cup in Bangladesh later this year have been enhanced with another strong performance in front of National selectors. The Southern Stars have drawn New Zealand in their opening World Cup fixture on 24 March.
